Our read
Gold is where Cradle to Cradle stops being a direction of travel and becomes a performance claim. The step up from Silver is substantial and it happens in every category at once. Material health moves from 95% assessed to 100% assessed with all x-assessed chemicals actually removed, not merely scheduled for removal. Circularity moves from 70% to 90% of materials compatible with a cycling pathway, and the improvement strategy must be implemented rather than documented. Clean air moves from a 20% target to 50% renewable electricity, with half of that from on-site generation or long-term power purchase agreements rather than unbundled certificates, plus quantified embodied emissions and 25% of them offset or addressed. Social fairness extends human rights risk assessment past tier 1 to components and raw materials at any tier. Because the overall level is the lowest of the five, a Gold product cleared all of that. What Gold still does not mean is decarbonised. Fifty per cent renewable electricity at the final manufacturing stage, with a quarter of embodied emissions offset, is a long way from a science-based absolute reduction across the value chain.
What it covers
- Gold or higher achieved in all five categories, since overall level equals the lowest category
- Material health: 100% of homogeneous materials assessed with no grey ratings, all x-assessed chemicals replaced or phased out
- Material health: very low VOC emissions or inherently non-emitting for building-installed products
- Clean air: 50% renewable electricity or GHG target, half of it on-site or via long-term PPAs
- Clean air: embodied cradle-to-gate emissions quantified with third-party or internal review, and 25% offset or otherwise addressed
- Circularity: 90% of materials by weight compatible with the intended cycling pathway and supporting high-value cycling
- Circularity: cycling partnerships initiated for all intended pathways, and the improvement strategy implemented rather than only written
- Water and soil: Silver conservation strategy implemented at all high-volume or stressed-location facilities, effluent chemicals optimised, positive impact project delivered
- Social fairness: human rights risks assessed for components and raw materials at any tier, third-party certification or traceability for child/forced-labour and conflict-risk materials, responsible sourcing management systems, contract-manufacturer grievance mechanism
What it leaves out
Not a criticism of the scheme. A standard is a scope, and this is where this one ends.
- Renewable electricity requirement is 50%, not 100%, and applies to final manufacturing stage only
- Only 25% of embodied emissions must be offset or addressed, and offsets are an accepted route
- No absolute science-based emissions reduction target required
- Product circularity is designed-for compatibility; actual cycling rates only required at Platinum for long-use products
- 10% of materials by weight may be incompatible with any cycling pathway
- Social audit data required from tier 1 suppliers; deeper tiers assessed for risk rather than audited
- No supplier-level unannounced audit requirement
- Company-wide performance outside the certified product and its final manufacturing stage is out of scope
- Water and soil positive impact project must be implemented but its measured impact is only required at Platinum

- levels are cumulative — To reach a desired achievement level within each category, the product must meet all of the requirements for that level, in addition to the requirements at all lower levels.
What we could not establish
Same accreditation caveat as the base Cradle to Cradle Certified record: external ISO/IEC 17065 accreditation of C2CPII's Conformity Assessment Bodies could not be confirmed. Could not establish what share of the certified product registry sits at Gold or above; C2CPII publishes the scorecard per product but no aggregate level distribution was located. Fee schedule read is the version effective 1 July 2025; a 2026 schedule is referenced by C2CPII but the amounts were not retrieved.
