Our read
Cradle to Cradle Certified is one of the broadest product standards in circulation. It reaches material chemistry, circular design, manufacturing energy, water and effluent, and labour in a single assessment, and every level requires a manufacturing site visit. That breadth is real and few marks match it. The thing readers most often get wrong is the level. The overall certification level equals the lowest level achieved across the five categories, so a product labelled simply Cradle to Cradle Certified may be Bronze, and Bronze is explicitly a starting point: inventory the materials, quantify energy and water use, write a strategy, hit a 5% renewable electricity or emissions target at the final manufacturing stage. A Bronze product has committed to a direction rather than demonstrated performance. The standard itself constrains this, capping Bronze at six years, but the mark on the packaging does not. Read the scorecard on the C2CPII registry, not the logo. Note also that scope is the product and its final manufacturing stage; upstream supply chain emissions are largely out of reach below Gold.
What it covers
- Material health: chemical inventory and hazard assessment of homogeneous materials
- Product circularity: defined cycling pathways, cycled/renewable content, design for disassembly
- Clean air and climate protection: final-manufacturing electricity and GHG quantification plus renewable targets
- Water and soil stewardship: effluent compliance, water-use quantification, conservation strategy
- Social fairness: human rights policy, risk assessment, tier 1 supplier data, grievance mechanism
- Compliance with leading chemical regulations and organohalogen restrictions above thresholds
- Packaging of the certified product assessed under Section 9 where applicable
- Mandatory final-manufacturing facility site visit at every achievement level
What it leaves out
Not a criticism of the scheme. A standard is a scope, and this is where this one ends.
- Overall level is the LOWEST of the five categories, so a Bronze in one category caps the whole mark
- Bronze is an intent-and-inventory level, not a performance level
- Bronze requires only a 5% renewable electricity or GHG target, on final-manufacturing stage only
- Embodied cradle-to-gate emissions not required to be quantified below Gold for most product types
- Scope 3 upstream supply chain emissions not required to be reduced at Bronze or Silver
- Circularity requirement satisfied at Bronze by publicly reporting the limitation instead of meeting it
- Assesses the product, not the company's overall footprint or corporate climate performance
- No animal welfare or land-use requirement unless Section 10 is triggered
- Certain organohalogen exemptions apply at Bronze

Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard, Version 4.1, released 2 May 2024, effective 1 July 2024
- overall level equals lowest category — The product's overall certification level is equal to the lowest level achieved in these categories (Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum).
- five categories and four levels — there are four possible levels of achievement within each of the standard's five key requirement categories: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum
- Bronze is an intent level, capped at six years — The Bronze level of certification is designed to recognize a company's intent to improve the way their product is made... a product may be certified at the Bronze level for a maximum of six years
- Bronze renewable electricity threshold — 6.4: 5% target(s) for procuring or producing renewable electricity and/or addressing greenhouse gas emissions have been achieved. Applicable to final manufacturing stage electricity and emissions only.
- site visit required at all levels — For all levels of certification, a final manufacturing facility site visit must be conducted as part of the certification process
- 3-year validity — Each product certification is valid for three years.
- cost_range — Certification Application $5,650 ... Re-Certification $3,700 ... Annual revenue less than 2.5M $1,250 ... Greater than 500 M $17,500
- enforcement via suspension — Failure to pay the annual fee will result in suspension of all product certificates related to the company.
What we could not establish
Could not confirm whether C2CPII's Conformity Assessment Bodies hold ISO/IEC 17065 accreditation from an independent accreditation body such as ANAB. C2CPII approves the assessment bodies, audits their reports and issues the certificate, so no external accreditation layer was verified; independence_score of 4 rests on the separation between assessor and certifier plus the mandatory site visit, not on confirmed external accreditation. No published register of suspensions or decertifications was located; delisting appears to occur through certificate expiry and removal from the public registry. Version 4.1 supersedes 4.0; the five categories and the lowest-level rule are unchanged between them.
