Our read
GreenChill measures one thing carefully. Supermarket refrigeration is a serious and under-reported emissions source, since a typical food retail refrigeration system leaks roughly a quarter of its refrigerant charge each year and many of those refrigerants have global warming potentials in the thousands. GreenChill sets numeric thresholds on GWP-weighted refrigerant charge relative to cooling load and on GWP-weighted annual emissions relative to load, and from January 2025 requires new installations to use a primary refrigerant with GWP under 150 plus two supporting measures. Those are real engineering thresholds and clearing Platinum takes capital investment. The two limits that matter for interpretation. It is a store-level mark, so a retailer with a GreenChill Platinum store may have hundreds of uncertified stores, and the mark says nothing at all about the goods on the shelves. And verification is EPA reviewing a workbook the store filled in itself, with no site audit and no third-party auditor, which places the mark closer to a well-specified self-declaration reviewed by a federal agency than to an audited certification.
What it covers
- Certifies an individual food retail store, not a company and not a product
- GWP-weighted refrigerant charge-to-load ratio, in pounds per MBTU per hour, against Platinum, Gold and Silver thresholds
- GWP-weighted annual refrigerant emissions-to-load, in metric tons CO2 equivalent per MBTU per hour, which is the leak-rate criterion
- Platinum: charge-to-load under 1,600 and emissions-to-load under 0.03; Gold: 1,600 to 2,000 and 0.03 to 0.08; Silver: above 2,000 to 2,400 and above 0.08 to 0.13
- For refrigeration equipment installed after 1 January 2025: primary refrigerant with GWP under 150, plus at least two of advanced technology, technician training, low-GWP HVAC refrigerants, or reclaimed refrigerant use
- Leak tightness testing at installation for newly constructed stores, per GreenChill Installation Leak Tightness Guidelines
- A separate Corporate Emissions Reduction Program for company-level refrigerant commitments
What it leaves out
Not a criticism of the scheme. A standard is a scope, and this is where this one ends.
- Covers refrigerants only: nothing on energy use, electricity source, water, waste, packaging or products sold
- No Scope 1 emissions beyond refrigerant leakage, and no Scope 2 or Scope 3 requirement
- Certifies a single store, so a chain's certified store says nothing about its other stores
- Says nothing about the products on the shelves or their suppliers
- No labour, sourcing or supply chain criteria
- Verification is EPA review of a store-completed application workbook; there is no site audit
- No third-party auditor or accreditation body involved at any point
- Voluntary recognition programme, not a regulatory requirement, and stores self-select into it
- No published sanction process for misreporting; certification simply lapses after twelve months

What we could not establish
Programme status: GreenChill was active at the time of reading, with the landing page last updated 28 May 2026 and no notice of pause, reduction or termination on any GreenChill page read. However, the certified stores page was last updated 12 December 2025 and its store count is stated as of 19 July 2024, so the published figure of 956 certified stores is roughly two years old and current participation could not be established. Could not establish, from a citable source, the effect of recent EPA budget or staffing changes on GreenChill; that question is left open rather than answered from inference. The 2025 criteria are published as draft guidance, so the Category 2 requirements may still be revised. Could not locate a corporate-level numeric emissions threshold for the Corporate Emissions Reduction Program, or any published sanction process for misreported applications.
