Our read
GreenCircle is a genuine third-party certifier, ANAB-accredited to ISO/IEC 17065, and the audit work behind an individual claim appears to be real: supplier documentation traced, pre-consumer and post-consumer material designated, a site visit conducted. The thing readers get wrong is structural. This is not a sustainability standard. It is claim verification, one claim at a time. A GreenCircle mark means a single declared attribute was checked, and the pack rarely tells the shopper which attribute, or at what level. The Recycled Content scheme illustrates the distance between the mark and the meaning: the floor for certification is 1 percent recycled content. Amazon's Climate Pledge Friendly programme applies its own separate 50 percent threshold for non-electronic products, which is a retailer rule layered on top, not part of the certification. Treat a GreenCircle mark as a pointer to a specific number that needs to be read, never as a general signal of product performance. Where the underlying claim and its verified value are disclosed, the evidence is worth something. Where only the logo appears, it carries very little.

What it leaves out
Not a criticism of the scheme. A standard is a scope, and this is where this one ends.
- Not a multi-attribute standard; the mark on a pack means one stated claim was checked, and which claim is usually not legible to the shopper
- No minimum sustainability performance overall; a product can carry the mark on a single narrow attribute while performing poorly on every other dimension
- Recycled Content certification requires only 1 percent or more recycled content, so the mark alone establishes almost nothing about material composition
- The certified percentage is not necessarily disclosed on the label; GreenCircle's public pages do not commit to on-pack disclosure of the verified figure
- No labour, human rights, worker safety or living wage criteria in the product claim schemes
- No animal welfare or chemical hazard threshold in the core claim schemes; Material Ingredient Reporting is disclosure, not a restricted substance list
- No published register of suspensions, withdrawals or decertifications
- No published fee schedule, and no published certificate validity term or surveillance audit interval
- Site visits may be virtual, so a certificate does not establish that an auditor was physically present
- GreenCircle writes its own certification schemes; ANAB accredits GreenCircle's conformity assessment process, it does not author or open the criteria to multi-stakeholder governance

What we could not establish
Could not source an explicit GreenCircle citation of ISO 14021 anywhere on its public site. The only ISO standard GreenCircle cites is ISO/IEC 17065, which is the accreditation standard for certification bodies, not a claims standard. GreenCircle's claim structure and its pre-consumer / post-consumer vocabulary track ISO 14021 Type II self-declared environmental claims, and its stated positioning is FTC Green Guides risk management, but the ISO 14021 link is inferred from terminology rather than cited by the certifier. Stated as such in what_it_covers rather than asserted. Also unresolved: certificate validity term, surveillance audit frequency, fee schedule, and whether any suspension or withdrawal has ever been published. ANAB accreditation to ISO/IEC 17065 requires a documented complaints and certificate-withdrawal procedure, so a process almost certainly exists; nothing about its use is public, which is why enforcement is scored 2 rather than 3. ANAB's own accredited-body directory returned HTTP 403 and could not be used to confirm the accreditation number independently of GreenCircle's own page. Confidence is medium, not high, because no primary standard or audit procedure document is published for any of the sixteen schemes.
