Our read
LEAF Marque assesses a farm against Integrated Farm Management across nine sections, from soil and IPM through energy, water, biodiversity and community engagement. Two features carry real weight. It applies to the whole farm business, not a single certified crop or field, so a grower cannot ring-fence a showcase block. And it is audited on-farm every year by an ISO 17065 accredited certification body, with the certificate valid for only twelve months. The point readers most often miss is the relationship to organic. LEAF Marque is not a reduced-input standard. It permits conventional synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, asking instead that chemical control sits within an IPM hierarchy, that use is justified and minimised, and that only nationally approved products are used. A LEAF Marque farm may use inputs an organic farm cannot. The second thing to note is that it is an add-on: only products already certified to an approved baseline assurance system are eligible, so the mark is a layer on top of an existing scheme rather than a floor of its own. Much of the standard is plan-based and record-based rather than threshold-based.

What it leaves out
Not a criticism of the scheme. A standard is a scope, and this is where this one ends.
- no prohibition on synthetic pesticides or fertilisers
- no organic or agroecological input restriction
- no absolute emissions, input or yield thresholds; requirements are largely plan, monitor and record
- labour standards, wages and worker welfare are not a section of the standard
- animal welfare outcome measures beyond the livestock management section
- no coverage of processing, packaging or distribution beyond the farm gate
- Advanced Control Points are optional, so a certificate can be held on Core only
- extensive Not-Applicable eligibility, so whole control points can be skipped
- does not stand alone; only products already certified to an approved baseline system are eligible

- nine sections and IFM basis — LEAF Marque is an environmental assurance system recognising more sustainably farmed products. It is based on LEAF's nine Integrated Farm Management (IFM) principles.
- whole-farm requirement — LEAF Marque certification applies to products from the whole farm business and is NOT limited to defined crops or enterprises within the business.

What we could not establish
Could not establish the country breakdown of the 877 certified businesses, so the degree of UK concentration is described qualitatively rather than quantified; LEAF is a UK organisation administering a scheme present in over 50 countries, and the public certified-business list was not reachable at the URL patterns tried. Did not read the LEAF Product List, so the specific approved baseline assurance systems (Red Tractor, GLOBALG.A.P. or others) are not named here; only the requirement that a baseline certificate exists is sourced. Publication of suspensions and withdrawals on the public list is permissive in the System Rules rather than mandatory, so routine public visibility of sanctions is not confirmed. Hectarage and percentage indicators on the impact page are drawn from the LEAF Global Impacts Report 2022 and may be stale relative to the 877 business count.
