Our read
First, the name. Travelife Gold was the top tier of the older Travelife for Hotels and Accommodations award, alongside Bronze and Silver. The operating accommodation scheme now issues a single status, Travelife Certified, under Certification Requirements Version 1.1, in use for audits starting after 30 June 2026. Read a Gold claim as a legacy label and check the current certificate. The separate tour operator programme runs Engaged, then Partner, then Certified; Gold does not appear there either. On GSTC status, be precise: Travelife is neither GSTC-Accredited nor GSTC-Recognized as of July 2026. It appears on none of the GSTC lists. What Travelife says is that its requirements are aligned with the GSTC Industry Criteria for Hotels, which is an alignment claim the scheme makes about itself, not a status GSTC confers. The scope is genuinely broad for a hotel scheme, particularly on fair labour, modern slavery, child safeguarding and animal welfare, which most environmental hotel labels do not touch. The climate requirement is monthly measurement and monitoring, not reduction. The number to hold is 40: a property can be found non-compliant on up to forty requirements at audit and still certify if it evidences the fixes within six months.
What it covers

What it leaves out
Not a criticism of the scheme. A standard is a scope, and this is where this one ends.
- no emissions reduction target; the requirement is to measure and monitor, not to reduce by a set amount
- no verified greenhouse gas inventory to an accounting standard and no Scope 3 requirement
- a property failing up to 40 requirements can still certify after post-audit improvements within six months
- no external accreditation body oversees the certification programme
- auditors are trained and approved by Travelife itself
- at the tour operator Partner stage the assessment is a desk audit by the applicant's own Travelife coach
- no site audit in the intervening year, only a remote document check-up
- no published register of withdrawn or suspended certifications

What we could not establish
The exact name is retained as the database join key, but no current Travelife award is called Gold. Gold was the top tier of the legacy Travelife for Hotels and Accommodations award scheme; the language survives on the older travelife.info site while the operating accommodation scheme at travelifestaybetter.com issues only Travelife Certified. When Gold, Silver and Bronze were formally retired could not be dated from a primary source. GSTC status was established by reading the GSTC-Accredited Certification Bodies list and the GSTC-Recognized Standards lists for hotels and tour operators directly on 26 July 2026; Travelife appears on none of them, and Travelife's own pages claim alignment with GSTC criteria rather than GSTC status. Whether Travelife holds an arrangement with GSTC as a 'Certification Scheme' under the framework introduced in January 2025 could not be established because the GSTC framework page returned a 404 and further requests were rate limited. The total number of Travelife Certified properties and tour operators could not be confirmed from a primary source; Travelife states it has carried out over 5,000 accommodation inspection audits since 2006. ISO 9001 certification covers Travelife's own quality management, not accreditation of its certification programme under ISO 17065.
