Each of these is worked through below — what the record shows, where it falls short, and the sources for both.

What the record shows

Founded in 1994 as the first 100% certified organic creamery in the United States; the Straus Dairy Farm certified the same year, first west of the Mississippi. The organic position is original, not adopted. 1

The methane digester has run since 2004 — self-initiated, predating every state dairy-methane grant program on record — powering the farm and its vehicles and cutting more than 700 metric tons of CO2e a year. 2 25

Milk has shipped in returnable glass since day one: a $3.00 deposit, a 70% return rate across the last ten years, and more than 3.5 million bottles back in 2025 against a stated 90% goal. Most of the category abandoned this position decades ago. 6 4 7

All 12 supplying farms carry a Carbon Farm Plan as of end-2025, funded in part by an incentive program that has moved an average of $250,000 a year to those farms since 2024. Farm pay averaged $38.43 per hundredweight in 2025 against a $34.53 network production cost. 4 10

Operational Scope 1 and 2 emissions are published — 1,802 MT CO2e in 2025, down 15% per hundredweight since 2021 — and the standing published commitment is a net carbon-neutral dairy model across all supplying farms by 2030. 4 5

The gap

Amazon's Supply Chain Standards have required suppliers to share emissions data and set reduction goals since 2024 — and Whole Foods, an Amazon subsidiary, is a core Straus channel. Albertsons, another channel, carries a validated science-based target that includes Scope 3. Those programs ask at product resolution: carbon intensity per SKU. The published record answers at farm and creamery resolution — a neutrality path by 2030 and an operational Scope 1·2 count. Based on available data, no product-level intensity figure exists to hand back when the request arrives. 23 24 4 13

The coverage edge

The published inventory counts creamery operations and, by the report's own note, does not yet include refrigerants. No Scope 3 inventory is published — and in dairy, the on-farm number is the largest one. The 2022 goal of a carbon-neutral farm by 2023 became a network-wide 2030 commitment: the date moved because the problem is hard, and the record says so plainly. 4 11

A certification, lapsed

TRUE Zero Waste arrived in 2019 — first creamery in the world — certifying the Marshall facility at 92% diversion. The certification did not travel to the new Rohnert Park creamery; re-certification is targeted for 2027. Until then, the world-first claim describes a building the company no longer operates. 8 4

Rules that apply to you

REGULATION

No direct obligation: the $1B threshold sits far above Straus. It arrives through buyers instead — in-scope reporters disclose full value-chain emissions starting 2027, and those numbers are assembled from supplier data requests. The first Scope 1·2 reports were deferred to November 10, 2026; the statute survived Ninth Circuit review that stayed its sibling. 14 15 16 22

The $500M threshold is also above Straus, and enforcement of the first report was stayed by the Ninth Circuit in November 2025; CARB ran a voluntary docket through July 1, 2026. When it returns, the mechanism is buyer-side risk narrative — which reads on supplier data too. 17 16 18

Regulations effective May 1, 2026. Reusable and refillable packaging is excluded from covered material — the returnable glass system sits structurally outside the obligation the rest of the category now pays for. Caps, tubs, and film remain covered and priced. 19 20 21

BUYER PROGRAMS
Amazon Supply Chain Standards (Whole Foods)SINCE 2024

Suppliers to Amazon and its subsidiaries — Whole Foods among them — are required to share carbon emissions data and set reduction goals, effective 2024. This is the nearest live data request in the Straus channel mix. 23 13

Albertsons (Safeway) — SBTi target incl. Scope 3TARGET SET

A validated science-based target that includes Scope 3 is measured through purchased-goods data — supplier numbers. Safeway is a Straus retail channel; the target's math eventually asks for dairy's share. 24 13

What to do next

Each gap above has a type of work that closes it. We list that here for free. If you want the specific vendors, the order to do them in, and what each step is likely to cost, that comes with a paid plan — and we walk it with you.

Product carbon intensity — per-SKU LCA

Converts the farm-practice record and creamery inventory into per-SKU carbon intensity — the resolution buyer programs request. The practices are already in place; this is measurement, not transformation.

GHG inventory completion — Scopes 1–3 with refrigerants

Brings refrigerants and the on-farm footprint into one published count with methodology stated — the shape a buyer questionnaire can ingest without follow-up.
